Welcome to the
Withrow High School
Alumni Association

OUR ALMA MATER (Verse 1)

Gentle slopes and lofty tower
              radiant in the sun
Arching bridge and shaded valley
         all our hearts are won.
Withrow's beauty, Withrow's splendor
         fill our hearts with pride
Love for you our Alma Mater
              ever will abide.

OUR ALMA MATER (Verse 2)

Friendships made in search of knowledge
         cherished bonds and true
Memories of golden hours
         hold us close to you.
As we venture from your portals
         aims held ever high
We'll look back to glimpse once more
         the tower 'gainst the sky.

The Mission of the
Withrow Alumni Association

Our mission is to support all Withrow Alumni by keeping them informed of current events, activities, fundraisers, and reunions that continue the positive traditions of our lovely institution.

The next Alumni Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2011
at 6:30 p.m. in the "Old Library" on the second floor of Withrow.

WITHROW HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME OPENS 2/4/12

Withrow High School began as East High School in 1919.  The name was changed to Withrow in 1925.
Since Withrow’s opening in 1919 our alumni have established a rich heritage of producing outstanding athletes
while attending Withrow and post-Withrow.
However, astonishing as it may seem, there has never been an Athletic Hall of Fame at the school... until now.

Through the determined efforts of many individuals by-laws were created and a recognition program has been born.

On Saturday, February 4, 2012 Withrow will induct its inaugural class
to the Withrow Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will take place in the Withrow Gym
at halftime of the 7:30 p.m. Withrow-Aiken boy's basketball game.

Among those being honored will be:

  1. Eddie Beamon, '74 (football)

  2. Ricky Calloway, '85 (basketball)

  3. Wilce Carnes, '36 (football, basketball, baseball)

  4. Dick Ernst, '50 (football, basketball, baseball, track)

  5. Joel "Joby" Haynes, '60 (basketball)

  6. Walt Maerki, '38 (football, basketball, baseball)

  7. Louis Orr, '76 (basketball)

  8. Dave Plunkett, '52 (basketball)

  9. Fred Ratterman, '30 (football, basketball, baseball)

  10. Bob Siekmann, Sr., '39 (football, basketball, baseball)

  11. LaSalle Thompson, '79 (basketball)

There will be an induction each year thereafter with a maximum of five inductees each year.

Further information may be obtained by using the emailing WAHOF@Withrowalumni.com  or writing:

To keep the program viable for many years
we would welcome any donations made payable to WAI, Inc.
and indicated they are for the Withrow Athletic Hall of Fame.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT… AND FOR CARING ABOUT WITHROW !

Can you imagine
WITHROW WITH NO BRIDGE ?

Sadly, our beloved bridge has again begun to show the signs of wear and aging.

In the 31 years since our last preservation effort, very serious problems have developed.

  pic of bricks damage

The walking surface has begun to deteriorate badly
and many bricks are loose and broken.

pics of rebar damage

The supporting structure has eroded
and begun to come apart under the bridge.

The repairs required to bring the bridge to a safe condition has been estimated to cost approximately $115,000
and includes major work on the walking deck, arch, and supporting columns.

Please read more about this in an article from Alumni Association president
Jack Cover
here .
If the full amount cannot be raised for the repairs, condemnation and blockade of the bridge has been discussed !

We all want to preserve the wonderful "Arching bridge and shaded valley..."
mentioned in our Alma Mater for future generations !

We know that as a group we can each chip in something to preserve
our precious bridge.
